Biography

Born on November 21, 1940, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Malcolm John Rebennack is an accomplished singer, songwriter, actor, guitarist and pianista. Better known by the stage name Dr. John, the multitalented artist navigates between the rhythms of blues, pop, jazz, zydeco, boogie woogie, rock’n’roll and funk. He has continuously shared and shaped the tradition of New Orleans R&B over the decades with his numerous albums and is considered a pioneering icon of the local style of R&B.

Having played guitar and piano for years in both his home city and Los Angeles, Dr. John made his album debut with Gris-Gris in 1968. A few years later, he had a hit single called “Right Place, Wrong Time”. Throughout his career that began in the 50’s, the musician has won several Grammy Awards in a variety of categories, including best jazz vocal performance, best rock instrumental performance, best traditional blues album. In 2001, Dr.John received another honor when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
