Have you ever felt the power of music to transport you - to connect you to a place, a culture, or a story that feels both foreign and deeply familiar? For over two decades, I’ve been blessed to be part of the Playing For Change family, a movement that celebrates this universal language and its ability to unite us all. I’m thrilled to share a behind-the-scenes look at our latest project, “Crossroads,” a video that has now been released and is ready for you to experience. This isn’t just a song - it’s a historic collaboration, a celebration of musical heritage, and a powerful reminder of how music can bridge divides and touch souls.

“Crossroads” is a journey through time and space, tracing the roots of music from Africa to America and beyond. The song carries a profound history, one that speaks to the resilience and creativity of the human spirit. Its origins lie in the transatlantic slave trade, where the rhythms and melodies of Africa were carried across the ocean, blending with Indigenous and European influences to create what we now know as the blues - a cornerstone of Americana music. The crossroads, both literal and symbolic, represent a meeting place of cultures, struggles, and triumphs. It’s where traditions collide, evolve, and give birth to something entirely new.

This project is a celebration of that legacy, bringing together musicians from around the world to honor the past while creating something entirely fresh and extraordinary. From the heart of New Orleans to vibrant streets, deserts, and serene temples, “Crossroads” is a vibrant tapestry of talent, culture, and emotion. It’s a global collaboration showcasing both legendary artists and emerging talents.

Our contribution to this masterpiece was recorded in the breathtaking landscapes of Chiang Mai, Thailand, where I had the honor of working with the incredibly talented master musician Anan Kantawee. Anan and I go back over a decade, having collaborated on previous Playing For Change videos, and it was an absolute pleasure to reunite with him for this project. His artistry embodies the spirit of northern Thailand, and his connection to the phin, a traditional three-stringed instrument, is deeply rooted in his heritage. Together, we set out to create a piece that would honor his culture while contributing to the larger tapestry of “Crossroads.”

Chiang Mai, with its rich history, stunning temples, and serene surroundings, provided the perfect backdrop for our recording. We found our spot at a temple adorned with intricately carved Naga statues - serpent-like dragons that symbolize wisdom and protection. These figures greeted us at the entrance, setting a tone of reverence and inspiration for the session.

Anan’s mastery of the phin is extraordinary. This instrument holds profound significance in Isaan culture, particularly in northeastern Thailand, where I currently reside. For Anan, the phin is more than just an instrument - it’s a link to his childhood, his spiritual journey, and the stories that have shaped his life. He spent over four years as a monk, beginning his spiritual path at the age of nine under the guidance of his grandfather, the head monk of their local temple. Though he later explored other musical avenues, the phin remains a cherished part of his identity.

Our recording session was a moment of pure magic. Anan’s heartfelt performance, accompanied by the ambient sounds of nature, transformed the space into a realm of emotion and connection. It was a humble contribution to a much larger project, but one we poured our hearts into. Both Anan and I are eternally grateful for the opportunity to be part of this historic collaboration. You’ll catch glimpses of our work in quick cuts towards the end of the video—a small but proud part of this global celebration.

But let me be clear: “Crossroads” is so much bigger than any one location or musician. It’s a global celebration, a result of the tireless work of producer Mark Johnson and the Playing For Change team, who traveled far and wide to bring this vision to life. Mark’s journey took him deep into the American South, to the literal crossroads of blues history in New Orleans and beyond. There, he met an incredible array of musicians - legends who’ve shaped the genre and young, emerging talents who are carrying the torch forward. The resulting performances are nothing short of extraordinary, a historic moment in music that you won’t want to miss.

And this is just the beginning. The release of the “Crossroads” video is only the first chapter of this incredible story. In the coming weeks and months, we’ll be sharing in-depth interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and other engaging content that dives deeper into the making of this historic project.
